I carved "Black Madonna" from a chunk of Pennsylvania fieldstone, a material that sculptors seldom use because of its extreme hardness and density. I named this figure after the "black madonnas" found in many places in Europe, especially in my native Catalonia. According to legend, these figures were found in fields or woods by a peasant or a shepherd. When the local villagers and their priest attempted to move the madonna to a church, she became unbearably heavy, leaving the people no choice but to build her a shrine right on the spot where she was found. |
